If your destination corporate meeting group is arriving on a
Sunday, think of throwing a calcotada as an opening reception.
What exactly is a calçotada and how does it work? It’s a weekly fiesta, thrown on Sundays, that
is quickly becoming an experiential eating event with a lot of new fans in New
York City. It features grilling a sweet green onion that is
a delicacy of the Tarragona region in Spain.
Since it would be hard to find a Catalan friend in Manhattan whose
family owns a country house in that region, try an eating establishment that
offer a calçotada experience. There are
more of them than you think and the list is growing.
The main purpose of the calçotada is having fun with your
fellow attendees while chatting, drinking wine, and eating with bibs. Yes, bibs!
Bibs are mandatory, not only because eating calçots with its sauce is tricky,
but also in case you want to drink wine with a porrón instead of using a normal
glass. Just remember you can’t touch the porrón with your lip, Drink
from a distance, so the porrón can be used by more than one person!
